Paragraph Unity : Penjelasan dan Contoh

Setelah sudah bisa memahami topic sentence yang terdiri  dari TOPIC + LIMITING STATEMENT, hal lain yang harus kita pahami adalah Paragraph Unity. Dengan mengetahui Paragraph Unity berarti setidaknya kita sudah bisa menilai apakah paragraf dari tulisan yang kita baca atau tulisan yang kita tulis itu berhubungan (nyambung) atau tidak.

Untuk lebih jelasnya, mari kita baca pendapat Arnaudet (1981: 8) yang mengingatkan:

Remember that besides the topic sentence, a paragraph includes several other sentences which in some way contribute to or support the idea in the topic sentence, In other words, all these sentences must be related to the topic and must therefore refer back to the topic sentence. Notice the arrows in the following diagram:

Menurut Arnaudet, selain topic sentence, paragraf juga terdiri dari beberapa kalimat tambahan dimana berfungsi mensupport atau mendukung keberadaan ide utama dari topic sentence. Dengan kata lain, semua kalimat harus berhubungan dengan topik yang sedang dibahas dan karena itu harus mengacu kembali pada kalimat topik utama. Perhatikan tanda panah pada diagram dibawah ini:

It is possible, of course, that some sentences may be directly related to the preceding supporting sentences (i.e" they provide examples, details, or further explanation):

Beberapa kalimat, tentu saja, bisa langsung berhubungan dengan supporting sentence (kalimat pendukung) sebelumnya. Maksudnya, supporting sentence (kalimat yang mendukung / berhubungan dengan kalimat topik utama) bisa dijelaskan kembali dengan cara seperti memberikan contoh, memberikan detailnya, atau penjelasan lebih lanjut). Lihat tanda panah pada diagram di bawah ini:

Lebih lanjut lagi Arnaudet (1981: 9) menjelaskan bahwa:

If a paragraph does all this-that is, 1) if it announces its main idea in the topic sentence, and 2) if all the supporting sentences contribute to the reader's understanding of the main idea-we say that a paragraph is unified, or that it has unity, If the paragraph fails to do this, we say that it lacks unity.

Dari pendapat Arnaudet diatas bahwa, paragraf harus memiliki dua hal, yaitu:

1.      Mempunyai ide utama pada topic sentence, dan

2.  Semua supporting sentence harus memberikan sumbangsih terhadap pemahaman pembaca tentang ide utamanya, artinya bahwa paragraf tersebut harus satu kesatuan, jika paragraf tidak memiliki hal tersebut, maka paragraf tersebut dikatakan paragraf yang tidak nyambung.

Contoh Unified Paragraph (Paragraf yang tidak nyambung)

   

        (1)   There are two main reasons why I have decided to attend Bingston University next year. (2) Applying to a college is a terribly complicated process. (3) Some of my friends chose colleges for very bad reasons. (4) John has never been to college.  (5)  I've met his grandfather, and he still has an incredibly sharp mind for a man of h is age. (6) Susan chose a university because the food in the region was said to be quite good. (7) Susan is really not too clever, I suppose, so I shouldn't criticize her. (8) Actually, I think it was her father who made the choice for her.

Contoh diatas benar-benar tidak menunjukkan dua alasan (two main reasons – lihat kalimat pertama pada contoh diatas) mengapa penulis tulisan tersebut memilih Bingston University. Tidak ada satupun Supporting Sentence (kalimat pendukung) yang berkaitan dengan topic kalimat utama. Untuk lebih jelasnya, lihat analisanya pada gambar di bawah ini:

Perhatikan ketidaksinambungan antara topic sentence dengan supporting sentence pada gambar diatas, apa itu disebut paragraph unity?

 

Contoh Paragraph Unity (contoh paragraf yang nyambung)

Agar contoh paragraf diatas nyambung alias mempunyai keterkaitan dengan topik kalimat utama (topic sentence), maka harusnya paragraf diatas menjadi seperti ini:

        (1)   There are two main reasons why I have decided to attend Bingston University next year. (2) First of all, there is the question of money; Bingston's tuition is reasonable, and I don't even have to pay it all at once. (3) This is very important, since my father is not a rich man. (4) With Bingston's "deferred payment plan," my father will be able to pay my tuition without too much difficulty. (5) The second reason is the fine education which I feel I will receive there in agriculture, my chosen field. (6) It is a well-known fact that Bingston hires only the finest professors in its Agriculture Department. (7) Moreover, the university requires all agricultural students to gain practical experience by working on farms in the area while they are still going to school.

Mengapa paragraf diatas dikatakan mempunyai satu kesatuan atau bisa dibilang paragraf yang nyambung? Lihat pada gambar di bawah ini:

Perhatikan gambar diatas, penulis mengungkapkan dua alasan mengapa ia memilih Bingston Universitiy bukan???
